1. Genus of minute prokaryotes that replicate in cytoplasmic vacuoles within susceptible eukaryotic cells. Genome about one third that of E. Coli, Chlamydia trachomatis causes trachoma in man, Chlamydia psittaci causes economically important diseases of poultry. Infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis are the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection, with an calculated annual incidence of 4.5 million cases in the USA. Chlamydia can cause a spectrum of infections including urethritis, epididymitis and proctitis in men, cervicitis, salpingitis and acute urethral syndrome in women and conjunctivitis and pneumonia in newborn infants.
