1. A genus of microscopic burrowing sarcoptid mites that infect fowl and caged birds; species include Knemidokoptes laevis var. Gallinae, the depluming mite, and Knemidokoptes mutans, the scaly leg mite. Origin: G. Kneme, leg, + kopto, to cut (05 Mar 2000)
