A blood fluke species related to Schistosoma haematobium locally distributed in Zaire and other areas of central Africa, causing mild dysentery and abdominal pains, with enlargement of the spleen and liver; a planorbid snail, Bulinus (Physopis) africanus, serves as the intermediate host.
