Medical Definition of West African fever

1. A condition, now uncommon, resulting from Plasmodium falciparum infection (malignant tertian malaria with severe haemolysis); frequently seen in Caucasians after interrupted treatment with quinine. Synonym: blackwater fever, haemoglobinuric fever, West African fever. (05 Mar 2000)
