1. A family of membrane-associated proteins responsible for the attachment of the cytoskeleton. The erythrocyte-related isoforms link spectrin cytoskeleton to a transmembrane protein (Band III protein) in the erythrocyte plasma membrane. Brain-related isoforms of ankyrin also exist. (18 Nov 2007)
