Definition of Decretage

1. Noun. (arts) A surrealist technique invented by Sasha Vlad in which the staples are removed from a number of pages in a staple-bound magazine, creating a number of formerly separated (front and back) "pages;" these "pages" are then analyzed for a connection between the images of the formerly separated pages, and then can be used as the basis for a collage, or left "as is," or, product of such a process. ¹
