Medical Definition of Fluorescence polarisation immunoassay
1. A technique which takes advantage of the increased polarisation (non-random propagation of emission) of fluorescent light emissions when a fluorescent labelled antigen is bound by reagent antibody. The higher the concentration of unlabelled patient antigen present in the test mixture, the less bound fluorescent antigen is present and, consequently, the lower the polarisation of the fluorescent light emission. Standard calibration yields quantitative results. (05 Mar 2000)
