1. An antiviral drug FDA-approved to treat CMV infection in the retina and elsewhere in the body. Also has activity against herpes simplex virus, including acyclovir-resistant strains. Possible adverse side effects include kidney toxicity, seizures, anaemia, nausea and skin rashes. (06 Mar 1998)
