Medical Definition of Gut-associated lymphoid tissue

Peripheral lymphoid organ consisting of lymphoid tissue associated with the gut (Peyer's patches, tonsils, mesenteric lymph nodes and the appendix).
It is especially rich in B-cells and is responsible for localised immunity to pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
