Medical Definition of Haemoblast

1. A blood cell derived from embryonic mesenchyme, characterised by basophilic cytoplasm and a relatively large nucleus with a spongy, loose network of chromatin and several nucleoli; mitochondria are extremely fine and delicate. Haemocytoblasts represent the primitive stem cells of the monophyletic theory of the origin of blood and have the potentiality of developing into erythroblasts, young forms of the granulocytic series, megakaryocytes, etc. Synonym: haematocytoblast, haemoblast.
