Medical Definition of Leishmania major

1. A parasitic haemoflagellate of the subgenus leishmania leishmania that infects man and animals and causes cutaneous leishmaniasis (leishmaniasis, cutaneous) of the old world. Transmission is by phlebotomus sandflies. (12 Dec 1998)
