Medical Definition of Leukostasis

1. Abnormal intravascular leukocyte aggregation and clumping often seen in leukaemia patients. The brain and lungs are the two most commonly affected organs. This acute syndrome requires aggressive cytoreductive modalities including chemotherapy and/or leukophoresis. It is differentiated from leukaemic infiltration which is a neoplastic process where leukaemic cells invade organs. (12 Dec 1998)
