Medical Definition of Maternal effect gene

1. Gene, usually required for early embryonic development, whose product is secreted into the egg by the mother. The phenotype is thus determined by the mother's, rather than the egg's, genotype. Compare:. Zygotic effect gene. See: egg polarity gene. This entry appears with permission from the Dictionary of Cell and Molecular Biology (11 Mar 2008)
