1. In psychoanalysis, a stage in the psychosexual development of the child, characterised by erotic attachment to the parent of the opposite sex, repressed because of fear of the parent of the same sex; usually occurring between the ages of 3 and 6 years. Synonym: oedipal period. (05 Mar 2000)
