Medical Definition of Phenylalanine 4-hydroxylase

1. An enzyme that catalyses the oxidation of l-phenylalanine to l-tyrosine with O2 and tetrahydrobiopterin (the latter forming the dihydro derivative) which is reduced by NADPH and a reductase to the active form; a deficiency of either of these enzymes will result in phenylketonuria.
