Medical Definition of Pneumocystis carinii infections

1. Infection with pneumocystis carinii, a fungus causing interstitial plasma cell pneumonia (pneumonia, pneumocystis carinii) and other infections in humans. Immunocompromised patients, especially those with aids, are particularly susceptible to these infections. Extrapulmonary sites are rare but seen occasionally. (12 Dec 1998)
