Medical Definition of Salicylazosulfapyridine

1. A drug that is used in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases, its activity is generally considered to lie in its metabolic breakdown product, 5-aminosalicylic acid (mesalazine) released in the colon. It is also used in the treatment of severe or progressive rheumatoid arthritis not responding to analgesics or anti-inflammatory drugs. Pharmacological action: anti-infective agents, anti-inflammatory agents, antirheumatic agents, gastrointestinal agents.
