Medical Definition of Yellow ligament

1. One of a series of bands of yellow (latin flavum) elastic tissue attached to and extending between the ventral portions of the laminae of two adjacent vertebrae, from the junction of the axis and the third cervical vertebra to the junction of the fifth lumbar vertebra and the sacrum. They assist in maintaining or regaining the erect position and serve to close in the spaces between the arches. (12 Dec 1998)
