1. A species of arenavirus, part of the tacaribe complex viruses, causing argentinian haemorrhagic fever. The disease is characterised by congestion, oedema, generalised lymphadenopathy and haemorrhagic necrosis, leading to death in up to 30% of the cases. (12 Dec 1998)
