Medical Definition of Ambulatory electrocardiography

1. An investigation, during which prolonged electrocardiographic recordings are made on a portable tape recorder (holter-type system) or solid-state device, while the patient undertakes normal daily activities. It measures the heart rhythm (ECG) over a 24 hour period while the patient records their symptoms and activities in a diary. After the test is complete, a correlation is made between the symptoms or activities recorded and the ECG pattern that was obtained simultaneously. It is useful in the diagnosis and management of intermittent cardiac arrhythmias and transient myocardial ischemia. (21 Jun 2000)
