Medical Definition of Antisense

1. In general the complementary strand of a coding sequence of DNA (antisense DNA) or of mRNA (antisense RNA). A collection of nucleotide sequences which are not templates for synthesis but yet interact with complementary sequences in other molecules thereby causing function of those molecules to be affected. Antisense RNA hybridises with and inactivates mRNA. (12 Dec 1998)
