Medical Definition of Aspartate transaminase

1. An enzyme of the transferase class that catalyses the reaction of l-aspartate and 2-ketoglutarate to yield oxaloacetate and l-glutamate. The enzyme is a pyridoxal phosphate protein. In the liver the reaction transfers excess metabolic nitrogen into aspartate for disposal in the urea cycle. Chemical name: L-Aspartate:2-oxoglutarate aminotransaminase Registry number: EC 2.6.1.1 (12 Dec 1998)
