Medical Definition of Clathrin

1. Protein composed of 3 heavy chains (180 kD) and 3 light chains (34 and 36 kD), that forms the basketwork of triskelions around a coated vesicle. There are two genes for light chains, each of which can generate two distinct transcripts by tissue specific alternative splicing.
