 A nucleoside analogue that inhibits infection of new cells by HIV.
It is FDA-approved for the treatment of HIV when used in combination with AZT in patients with CD4 cell counts below 300 who have deteriorated despite treatment and as monotherapy following AZT-failure.
Possible side effects include nerve damage in the hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy) and sores in the mouth.
