Medical Definition of Drug side effect

1. An often undesirable effect that occurs in association with the use of a particular medication. Examples of common drug side effects include: nausea, vomiting, sedation, dizziness, headache and weakness. Drug side effects that occur in 1% or more, of patients taking a particular medication are considered to be causally related to the use of that medication. (27 Sep 1997)
