Medical Definition of Ectopic heartbeat
1. Any heartbeat that occurs out of the normal sinus rhythm of the heart. Examples include premature ventricular contractions and atrial premature contractions. Premature beats can be exacerbated by the use of stimulants such as caffeine, smoking, alcohol, decongestants and cocaine. (27 Sep 1997)
