1. Higher organisms, whose cells contain a true nucleus, with a well-defined membrane surrounding the nucleus. Plants and animals are eukaryotes (as opposed to prokaryotes, which are cells that lack a membrane-bound nucleus, i.e., bacteria). (14 Nov 1997)
