Medical Definition of Fundus diabeticus

1. A major cause of blindness in diabetics. Retinal disease results from adverse effects on the blood vessels which supply the retina. Swollen retinal vessels which leak fluid into the retina are commonly seen on physical examination of the eyes. Poorly controlled insulin dependent diabetes and/or hypertension are the major risk factors. Symptoms include decreased vision and colour perception. Origin: Gr. Pathos = disease (27 Sep 1997)
