Medical Definition of Glandulae tarsales

1. Sebaceous glands embedded in the tarsal plate of each eyelid, discharging at the edge of the lid near the posterior border. Their secretions create a lipid barrier along the margin of the eyelids which contains the normal secretions in the conjunctival sac by preventing the watery fluid from spilling over the barrier when the eye is open. Synonym: glandulae tarsales, meibomian glands, palpebral glands. (05 Mar 2000)
