Medical Definition of Hypertonic solution

1. Any solution which has a higher osmotic pressure than another solution (that is, has a higher concentration of solutes than another solution). A solution which contains a higher concentration of solutes than the cells that it is bathing, so that water is drawn out of the cells and into the solution by osmosis. A hypertonic solution is the opposite of a hypotonic solution. (09 Oct 1997)
