Medical Definition of Ligand induced endocytosis

1. The formation of coated pits and then coated vesicles as a consequence of the interaction of ligand with receptors, which then interact with clathrin and associated proteins (coatomers) on the cytoplasmic face of the plasma membrane and come together to form a pit. Not all coated vesicle uptake of receptors requires receptor occupancy. This entry appears with permission from the Dictionary of Cell and Molecular Biology (11 Mar 2008)
