Medical Definition of Pars distalis

1. The larger part of the adenohypophysis composed of cords of epithelial cells individually specialised to secrete various tropic hormones that exert their effect on several target organs in the body. The secretory activity of these cells is under the control of either releasing or inhibiting factors elaborated by hypothalamic neurons and transported to the adenohypophysis by the hypothalamo-hypophysial portal system.
