Medical Definition of Transthyretin

1. Is a pre albumin plasma protein (4.5 mM in plasma) that transports thyroxine. Tetrameric with 4 identical 127 residue subunits. Transthyretin forms a complex under physiological conditions with retinol binding protein (2mM in plasma) so that retinol binding protein is not lost by filtration in the kidney. (19 Jan 1998)
