Medical Definition of Villi intestinales

1. Microscopic finger-like projections (0.5 to 1.5 mm in length) off of the mucosal lining of the small intestine which are responsible for absorption of nutrients. The villi greatly increase the effective absorptive surface area of the small intestine. (27 Sep 1997)
