Medical Definition of Agrin

1. Protein isolated from the synapse rich electric organ of Torpedo californica that induces the formation of synaptic specialisations on myotubes in culture. Present in muscle cells before innervation and concentrated at the neuromuscular junction once AChR clustering occurs. The release of agrin from motor axon terminals is thought to trigger the formation of the postsynaptic apparatus at developing and regenerating neuromuscular junctions.
