Medical Definition of Bilateral hydronephrosis

1. Refers to the bilateral enlargement of the renal pelvis and calyces of the kidneys. This is not a disease itself but a finding associated with a variety of disease states which interfere with the drainage of urine from the kidneys to the ureters and into the bladder. Examples include acute and chronic bilateral obstructive uropathy, vesicoureteric reflux, ureteropelvic junction obstruction, neurogenic bladder, bladder outlet obstruction and prune belly syndrome.
