Medical Definition of Cholestyramine resin

1. A strongly basic anion-exchange resin in the chloride form, consisting of a copolymer of styrene and divinylbenzene with quaternary ammonium functional groups; it lowers the blood cholesterol by binding the bile acids in the intestine, thus promoting their excretion in the faeces instead of reabsorption from the bowel; used in the treatment of hypercholesterolaemia, xanthomatous biliary cirrhosis, and other forms of xanthomatosis.
