1. An excited mental state seen in a bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder characterised by hyperactivity, talkativeness, flight of ideas, pressured speech, grandiosity, and, occasionally, grandiose delusions. See: mania, manic-depressive. Synonym: acute mania. (05 Mar 2000)
