Medical Definition of Nasal polyp

1. A projection of the mucosa lining the nasal and paranasal sinuses that is rounded and elongated within the nasal cavity. A common cause for nasal airway obstruction in patients who suffer from allergic sinusitis. They are found more commonly in those with chronic allergic rhinitis or sinusitis. Large nasal polyps can interfere with nasal breathing and are often removed surgically to improve breathing and decrease chronic allergic symptoms. (27 Sep 1997)
